Preparation can make all the difference when disaster strikes
- Prepare children living in disaster-prone areas: tell them what could happen, how to react and how they can get help if and when disaster strikes, however unlikely. Give tips on how they can safeguard themselves, their families, their property and their environment.
- Get children's input when disaster plans are being developed. Identify local risks and hazards, publish them in media that everyone can understand and see, like posters. Consider murals or simple drawings for primary school children and ensure all learn them.
- Train staff trained in child health, development, protection, consultation and participation. Joint training with other organisations uses resources well and helps build relationships which will be vital for good disaster management. Encourage child development experts who visit projects to run training sessions for local staff.
