Plan resumes work in Pakistan after attack
28 February 2008: Plan, the leading international children’s NGO, today resumed work in Pakistan 3 days after an attack on its offices that left 4 people dead.
All Plan offices in Pakistan were closed after the attack in which 3 staff and 1 community volunteer were killed and a further 2 people seriously injured. All of those killed were Pakistani men.
Offices in the capital Islamabad and 2 programme offices in the Punjab have reopened today after a review of the situation and a further tightening of security measures. However all field work remains suspended.
Operations in Mansehra remain suspended pending further assessments of the local security situation. The Mansehra programme office burned to the ground after attackers set off 3 explosive devices. Plan employs 126 staff in the country, the majority of who are Pakistani nationals.
The motive for Monday’s attack remains unclear and is being investigated by Pakistani authorities.
