19 November 2007: Plan is providing emergency aid to 50,000 children and family members whose lives have been shattered by Cyclone Sidr.

The cyclone, which hit southern Bangladesh on 15 November, has killed 3,000 people and left nearly half a million people homeless.

Make a donation

Plan’s support will focus on 3 districts – Baraguna, Putathali and Barisal - and will provide survival packs, shelter and psycho-social support for children whose lives have been devastated by the disaster.

Please help us assist those affected by making a donation via our fundraising countries:

Cyclone Sidr has caused extensive damage to 95% of crops in 11 districts.

The country’s power system collapsed completely; while electricity is slowly being restored, telecommunications are still out in the most severely affected areas.

Children hard hit

Plan Bangladesh Acting Country Director Haider Yaqub said: “Children have been particularly hard hit by this disaster. More than 40% of the dead are children. Many of the survivors are now orphans.

“Survivors are traumatised having seen their homes blown away. A quick response to provide food, clothing and shelter is vital to help them rebuild their lives.”

Plan does not have any active programs in the areas directly affected by the cyclone. Therefore, all sponsored children are presumed to be safe.
