23 April 2008: Plan is taking urgent action to help children in flood-hit Tanzania who now face greater danger from Africa’s deadliest disease, as the globe prepares to mark World Malaria Day.
600 children and adults have been forced from their homes by flooding across the Morogoro region in the last week.
Now the water is receding, stagnant pools have formed creating perfect breeding grounds for malaria-carrying mosquitoes.
Plan is the only international non-governmental organisation to have responded to the floods – providing emergency relief and distributing hundreds of bed nets treated with insecticide to help prevent the spread of malaria.

Killer disease
David Muthungu, Plan Tanzania’s Country Director, said: “Urgent action is needed to prevent children dying from malaria.
“These children have endured many hardships caused by the floods over the past week.
“They have lost homes, been prevented from continuing their education and have struggled to find food and drinking water. They now face the increased threat of catching Africa’s biggest killer disease.”
World Malaria Day
On Friday 25 April, World Malaria Day will focus the world’s attention on combating malaria.
Every 30 seconds a child is killed by malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Plan works in 43 of the world’s 85 malaria endemic countries, helping children, their families and communities to build a safe and healthy environment in which to live.
