Livelihood

Improving children’s welfare by increasing family income and food security

The unemployment rate in Brazil continues to be astronomically high at around 26 per cent. To help parents increase their chances of getting work and so better provide for their children, we started literacy courses in Portuguese and mathematics for 420 adults.

We also provided play kits to three community crèches (day care centres) that serve nearly 300 children of the poorest families in the Pernambuco area. All these day care centres have teaching staff trained by Plan and their existence means that mothers are able to work.

As Rita Cassia da Silva explained:

“For me the crèche is very important because I have a safe place to leave my children while I am working.”
