Plan Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic shares the Caribbean island of Hispaniola with the country of Haiti. It has an extension of 48,730 squares kilometers.
The Dominican Republic is well known for its merengues, its gastronomy, its winter baseball season, its hand-made tobacco and its musical festivals. Its economy is based on tourism, followed by free zones, agriculture and dollar remittances of the Dominican population living abroad.
In spite of having the most sustainable economic growth in Latin America during the last decades, the social deficit is considerably high. Education, Health, Environment, and other issues have not been considered as a priority, leaving children in rural area in a situation of vulnerability. In this context, Plan will focus on social change addressing Children’s rights, especially in the southwest part of the country, region where most of its work is implemented.
Plan Dominican Republic also places emphasis on the integration of Haitian immigrants and their descendants, the most vulnerable, in all the areas of our work. For this reason is working in collaboration with Plan Haiti to coordinate efforts and work jointly on the problems shared by both nations and those living along the borders, to combat child trafficking, discrimination and HIV/AIDS.
