Plan Dominican Republic promotes cultural exchange to raise awareness about global issues, and promoting the interaction and connection among young people across the world.
Two Dominican adolescents between 12 and 14 years of age, participated in YUGA (Youth United for Global Action and Awareness), a six-day summer camp supported by Plan USA in Harvard, Massachussets, with more than 60 participants from all over the world, including countries where Plan works, such as Honduras and Haiti.
Our Dominican delegation was represented by Hilda from the community of Las Barías en Azua; who belongs to the Childmedia program in the area, and Sergio Ariel from the community of El Paraiso who belongs to the Health Multipliers Group. They both made an excellent intervention and had a very successful experience of the trip. They showed maps of their communities and talked about the problems affecting the youth such as: drugs, migration, domestic violence, AIDS and other issues.
Hilda remembers: “I will never forget this trip and will always be grateful for the opportunity. Thanks to all the preparation we received from Plan staff, I always felt secure to say the right thing. This experience also motivated me to learn English, I learned a little bit with my American friends.”
