Improving children’s welfare by increasing family income and food security
The damage to businesses and the economy caused by the earthquakes also resulted in higher rates of unemployment. To increase food production and incomes in rural areas, we helped organise agricultural training sessions for more than 420 farmers. The project provided expertise on improved crop techniques, as well as nutritious food for children. The benefits were explained by 23 year-old Méndez:
“My children like the cucumbers a lot. It feels good to give them something healthy to eat when they want a snack and the best part is that it is right here in our own backyard.”
