Learning

Helping children, youth and adults learn and develop life skills

Many Honduran children don’t enrol in school and, of those who do, only about 60 per cent reach grade five. One of the reasons children don’t attend primary school is that too many parents can’t afford the cost of the educational materials.

Last year, we supported a project to distribute classroom supplies to 34,000 students – in line with government requirements. The children were very enthusiastic and treasured the supplies and equipment received. These simple sets are allowing them to continue their learning.

When family incomes are tight, sending children to secondary school can sometimes be a difficult decision to make.  In order to help raise awareness about the importance of continuing education beyond primary level, and to help children who are keen to continue learning, we initiated an innovative radio programme. The ‘Teacher at Home’ radio programme provides education on leadership and management to youth and adults who have no post-primary education.
