Building secure, safe and healthy environments for children

A large number of people in Paraguay lack basic services.  For example, 40 per cent of families do not have access to safe, clean drinking water and are therefore at increased risk of serious health problems. This is especially true for young children who are particularly susceptible to waterborne illnesses, including diarrhoea and intestinal parasites.

Last year, we worked with communities to build 32 new water systems, bringing access to clean water to over 3,400 children and their families. The communities also elected members of local water commissions to administer and monitor the projects and manage the water systems.  As Pelagio Burgos, a member of the San Ramon community water commission, said:

“During many years we have been struggling to get some water for our community.  Now, with the support of Plan, we can access this vital liquid.”
