Safe drinking water is now available to children and families in Fusheng village, Pucheng County, China, thanks to a Plan project.
Together with Plan, community members constructed a water supply system and improved village roads. The villagers also built new latrines as part of an environmental sanitation awareness campaign.
Water supply problems
Before the construction of the water supply pipeline, Fusheng community members had great difficulty in obtaining sufficient quantities of water and did not have a reliable source of safe drinking water.
Most households depended on collecting rainwater, while the more affluent households had water brought from other villages 5–10 kilometres away at a considerable cost of 15-20 RMB per cubic metre.
The lack of safe drinking water not only affected the villagers’ health, but also hindered the economic development of the whole village.
Project benefits
Many community members participated in digging the ditch for the water pipeline.
“This project will bring a lot of economic benefits to our village and will protect the health of our children and grandchildren. We drank rainwater for almost our entire lives. Our grandchildren shouldn’t have to drink rainwater anymore!” said Mr Shi Jucai, aged 71.
Mr He Shanweng, aged 68, said: “Since my son has gone to the city to work, he can’t be here to help dig the trench. Even though I’m old, this water system improvement project is very important to our village, so I want to participate.”
