Improving children’s welfare by increasing family income and food security
Although many communities we work with rely on farming for their livelihood, they rarely grow vegetables and focus instead on growing more profitable crops for sale. This is a problem in areas where children are malnourished and especially for families who don’t have enough money to buy vegetables.
To increase the availability of green vegetables, we provided seeds and other support to women to start kitchen gardens in their backyards. Approximately 250 women participated and they are now getting vegetables for most of the year without having to pay for them. In addition, children are now getting a better diet, are sick less often and take fewer days off school.
