Younth leader from Kupang

Venti, a junior high school child sponsored with Plan Indonesia, received a Young Leadership Award for enhancing the development of children living in her area.

She showed strong leadership and commitment when organising children’s activities and spoke out of children’s aspirations in front of adults.

The Award, conducted by UNICEF, wasn’t based only on Venti’s presentation during the May event, but also on her daily life in Kupang. She was committed to enhancing the development of the children living in her area.

With the help of Plan, she has established a reading center in her house since 2000. This increased the interest of children in her neighborhood to read. The center also become the place for sharing and discussing possible solutions. Amazingly, the children were then able to arrange help and support for their friends who dropped out of school because of economic or other reasons. They even did awareness raising among local parents on the importance of formal education.

It is indeed a blessing, that Venti’s efforts have become the platform generating Child’s Rights development in Kupang – as an important part of Plan’s program in Indonesia. Children under her leadership have also done their best to help their community understand children’s potentials and for participating in development processes.

Venti is just one success story on how a child can be empowered when given the opportunity for development and participation.
