The people of Kitnee village, Makwanpur, Nepal now have drinking water near their homes. And students from Laxmi primary school now have drinkable water within their own grounds, so both students and teachers are happy. This year, 12 drinking water taps have been built with support from Plan and RADO Nepal, a local Non-Governmental Organisation.

Most of the villagers are of the Thapamagar caste and there are 42 households. The village was formerly without any water tap. People used to fetch water from a nearby brook and local resources (kuwa). These resources were not clean and the people frequently used contaminated water.

The villagers participated enthusiastically to create his success. When RADO Nepal started work, people were motivated to participate with the hope of getting accessible pure water. During the project, community people - both women and men - collected stones and dug the pipeline. Plan partner RADO provided technical and managerial support to the user committee, which was formed to ensure the project was completed on time.

Now the committee is working as a gatekeeper to sustain the project. They have collected funds to maintain these taps in future. This fund has already reached Rs 12,000. Tilak Bahadur Thapa, resident and chairperson of the user committee, says, “Now, with Plan’s support, we are getting enough pure water in our village.”
