Livelihood

Improving children’s welfare by increasing family income and food security

Last year, Plan encouraged the government to make 500 hectares of scrub, wasteland and river margins available to nearly 1,400 families who, with Plan’s help, prepared the land to produce grain, timber, fodder (dried hay) and forage (food for cattle).  Families appreciated the project, as described by Mrs Ram, mother of a sponsored child:

“I was landless before the project came. Now, I have land.  I earn about Rs800 each time I sell the surplus vegetables in local markets.”

These vegetables not only help families supplement their incomes, enabling them to provide for their children, they also add nutritional value to their own diets.

Farmers chill out as milk no longer goes to waste
Milk producers used to have to throw milk away after a major colection was complete. A new chilling facility is making the difference.

Working together in cooperatives, people in Nepal are creating greater opportunities for themselves and their neighbours. Increasing family income provides greater security for the family, and results in more children being able to attend school

Landless farmers join together to achieve more
Vegetable farming saved Anita, who went from being a struggling, landless farmer to earning 3 times the average salary for the area. She lives in Sunsari, Nepal; a remote village with limited opportunities for income to the poor farmers
