Tsunami poetry

Poems from children affected by the tsunami in Hambantota, Sri Lanka.

The cruel wave called tsunami
The big wave came and took away the small buds (children)
To whom can I talk about this, my god?
It was a full moon day and we were ready in white when we got the bad news
It was on a Sunday so the weekly market was there
Why did you go to the market mother on this holiday just to get killed?
I warn you my brother you are going to the sea to fish - do not get killed
Lord Buddha why did this happen to us?
There are so many children taken away by the sea
We will give strength to those who are left though we have lost many
We have never done anything to the sea so do not be cruel to us any more
Lasanda aged 12

The ocean got rough
It rose up and filled the sky with tears
You have taken human blood
And mixed it with salt water
Now that is enough
Stop your cruelty
Nadeeha aged 12
