Tempting tomorrow’s street children to stay home

Quang Thai commune is renowned as a poverty stricken area where children leave home for the city seeking money to support their families. Thanks to local authorities working with Plan the community has made huge headway addressing this problem.

Local authorities have made loans to the families of these children and dedicated volunteers have disseminated information about the dangers that threaten street children in large cities. The education campaign is aimed at parents to persuade them to keep their children at home.

Plan has supported the children and community by building an eight classroom primary school. This ensures the children can get an education, rather than being tempted to work in the city. Fortunately, the number migrating to the cities to earn a living has decreased from 800 in 1994 to only 31 this past year. Plan will continue to help support the local authorities to help ensure children are safe at home with their families.
