Learning
Helping children, youth and adults learn and develop life skills
Poor economic conditions make schooling unaffordable for many families and contribute to high drop-out rates, which have reached 13.5 per cent in the poorest areas of the country. Part of the problem is that schools lack basic furniture and have a low access to information technology.
To increase access to education and improve the learning environment we coordinated a project with Egypt’s Ministry of Education and a number of communities to provide benches and several computers for over 11,700 children. Plan supported the program financially with 80 per cent of the purchases, while the Ministry of Education provides ongoing maintenance of both the benches and computers.
Other learning initiatives focused on early childhood education, which is crucial in the development of young children. Last year, 50 pre-school teachers were trained in promoting these aspects of child development within daycare centres for 1,220 children.
