Growing up healthy

Ensuring children’s survival, protection and healthy development

One of Plan’s goals in Kenya is to reduce childhood illness. In the areas where we work, approximately 40 per cent of children under three years old get malaria, nearly 20 per cent suffer from diarrhoea (which can be fatal if left untreated) and about half aren’t fully immunised.

In one area, Kwale, we co-operated with Kenya’s Ministry of Health in conducting 70 health action days.  These benefited nearly 1,600 children who were treated for preventable illnesses and more than 5,400 children and pregnant women who were immunised.

In addition, an emergency health project provided surgery and medical services for 230 children who were bitten by snakes, injured in accidents or involved in other situations that required immediate medical responses.
