Learning

Helping children, youth and adults learn and develop life skills

In the Zambian areas where we work, only about 70 per cent of children attend primary school, which is much lower than the national average of 85 per cent. Last year, we co-operated with community groups to create different education projects that would increase access to primary school. For 3,600 students whose parents couldn’t buy school uniforms, we helped provide the clothes. For communities with no schools, we assisted the community in building new classrooms.

The school in Manyonyo is typical of this project. Led by the community, we furnished the new school with desks, tables and chairs. Children no longer had to walk 10 kilometres or more to get to class.  As 13 year-old Martha said:

“I am so happy for such a beautiful school. We used to learn in a school with a grass roof and walls made of mud bricks. Now, we don’t worry about the rains and we’re happy that we sit at good desks.”
