Improving children’s welfare by increasing family income and food security

Last year, Plan partnered with the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics to promote a new, high-yielding groundnut. Groundnuts (peanuts) are popular in some areas of Zambia and a total of 500 families each received 10 kilograms of seed. The agreement was that, after harvest, each family would give 10 kilograms to another family in the same community.

To support this activity, training and field days were held to equip the farmers with the necessary skills to grow the groundnut variety. Within one season, the two communities that participated produced 6,600 kg and repaid more than 8,000 kg.
