Improving children’s welfare by increasing family income and food security

The United Nations World Food Programme in December 2001 classified 80 per cent of Zimbabweans as living in abject poverty.  One way to battle poverty – to increase incomes over the long-term – is to offer job training to young people.

Last year, a vocational-training project helped over 100 men and women to gain skills in areas such as agriculture, clothing technology and business studies. Sithulisiwe Ncube, the sister of a sponsored child, said:

“I was born to a peasant farmer. I could not further my studies. Thanks to Plan, I am learning to be an accountant. I am now seeing light in my future and I hope to be somebody in life.”
