Habitat

Building secure, safe and healthy environments for children

Fresh, clean water is the best drink on the planet but only half the population in Benin has access to it.

Last year, we continued supporting programs that increase access to clean water in the regions of Mono and Couffo. Communities drilled or dug 17 wells and installed 24 water tanks in schools and health clinics. Nearly 50 water management committees were also trained to maintain the new facilities. These committees are made up of volunteer community members and include representatives from all sectors of the community.

More children now have access to clean water, reducing waterborne diseases and giving them more time to play or study rather than spending it collecting water. Communities celebrated the success of the projects during International Water Day, where Mr Ahouanse, a government official, said:

“Plan ranks first in terms of the implementation of water facilities in Mono and Couffo.”
