Louis Michel talks with the children

The children interviewing Louis Michel European Commissioner in charge of Developement and Humanitarians aid

The Media & Development Forum has been an opportunity for us children and youth journalists to meet with high personalities. One of them, Louis Michel, European Commission in charge of the Development and the Humanitarian issues, kindly accepted to offer us an interview.

Young Reporter (Y.R) : Do the authorities of the Euroean Union work towards the promotion of Child’s Rights?

Louis Michel (LM) : Of course, it is fundamental in the implementations of strong policies centred on children, women and human rights as well, particularly the rights of women and children because the rights of the most weak from the society are fundamental. We need to be careful in protecting the rights of those groups.

Y.R. : Do you believe that we have a role to play as children in the media space ?

LM : You are busy doing exactly what needs to be done. You are busy training yourselves, listening to us, sharing your wills and preoccupations. You are busy generating dynamic exchange of opinion, discussions and participation for your home communities. You are doing exactly what we hope you will do. We really want to help you. Creating exchange with teenagers, schools, doing exchange programmes between villages and cities; you should find European youths to work towards this kind of partnership. You could then go and visit them, and host them in your communities as well.

Y.R : While reading the Forum’s agenda we notice there is so little place for the youth!

LM : There isn’t really a need to have more or less space for the youth. Proof is each of you are present to this forum. In the society, it is more important to have the youth express itself. The society is not the addition of the bolds, plus the women, plus the teenagers, plus the elderly, plus the bearded people. A society is a mix, I love talking with you and we are not of the same age. It is important for interaction to take place between all social, cultural and age categories. It is important that society is not seen as small bubbles or kennels. The interests of the elderly are also yours and vice-versa. The sorrow of a human being has nothing to do with its age or gender. We suffer more or less the same way. A society is build when everyone becomes a team. Teenagers should be given all the means possible to express themselves, be happy and succeed in their lives, contribute to a more prosperous, free and fair society.

Y.R : To talk about freedom, What can be done for the African media to gain more freedom?

LM: I hope that during this forum here in Ouagadougou, we will be able to organise interaction sessions between African and European journalists. We can invite African journalists to Europe, in TV, Press and radio studios in order to, at least, explain to them how European journalists manage information, how they apply ethic rules and so on. Our dream is that parties, journalists, countries would sign one journalistic charter of ethics. When a media professional comes in the studio he or she should be able to report news honestly and correctly.

Y.R : But is it not better to give the African media the means ?

LM : What do you mean by means ?

Y.R : Material and Financial means !

LM : Good question. It is likely to consider giving this type of support to the African media and media in developing countries in general. In Africa, advertisement capitals are very poor and this leads papers and media in general to fall in the hands of Power and Corruption. I hope this issue will be discussed during the forum. Should we support the African media in order for them to give a free opinion and create a real debate between the different media? I am not against supporting media in order to have a free Press, but this issue, I can consider, if it does not means to support only one opinion or one political idea.

Interview produced by the Young Reporters on the occision of the “Media & Development”forum.
