Ouagadougou opens the way

The President of Burkina Faso

The Capital of Burkina, Ouagadougou, hosted a forum on the theme “Media & Development” from September 11th to 13th 2008. The forum was organised by the African Union’s Commission and the European Commission in partnership with the International Organisation of La Francophonie, the Common Wealth and La Communidade dos Paises de Linga Portuguesa.

Plan international took part to this event and left a message in the person of Mrs. Aminatou Sar, regional coordinator of the Media Projects. She gave a speech on “the role of local media: a local action for a global success”. Plan was also present with five young reporters who wrote articles, lead interviews and took video footage.

Politicians, media professionals, the Civil Society discussed 48 hours long on the theme media and good governance, media freedom, local media role, how Europe sees Africa and how Africa sees Europe. Discussions ended in roadmap showing actions to be taken in order for the media to play their role efficiently in the countries’ development progress.

Aware of the media’s important role in development progress, participants agreed that African journalists should have access to training in order to respect media ethics. African Journalists also need financial and material support so to be well equipped and do a good job. The forum was a success thanks to the European-African partnership as well as the interesting discussions that went on.
