Sampalo is a community of 1000 inhabitants divided into 5 sectors and used to have only two water pumps. The water pumps used to have troubles working and people would queueu hours to fetch water when they did work. Hopeless, the people used to share a swamp three miles from the village with their cattle. Which caused epidemics and deseases.
in 1990, Sampalo build a school which had a hundred pupils. To facilitate their chores and at the same time encourage them attend class more often, Plan installed a water pump in 2006.Indeed, the pupils had to provide their house with water each morning and in the afternoon they would fetch water to for the cattles.
"The lack of Water had a big impact on the pupils presence to school. Many had to provide their family with water in the morning and in the afternoon they brought water to give their cattle before they came back in class" remembers Saidou Ouédraogo, teacher at Sampalo's school.
Sawadogo, a fourth grade pupil says" We are happy about the construction of the water pump. We don't have to come to school with barrels of water anymore."
The water drill and the space all around is cleaned up every three days by the women with the support of the Comity of water places and sanitation management. the Comity has been trained by plan to take care of the Water system and make it last "We also teach the women hygene notions" says Diane Jeanine Sawadogo, president of the comity. "Water is no longer a worry to Sampalo. This is a borehole for the school but the whole village finds its interest in it. The school is part of the village after all." says Jeanine with a smile.
