Children speak out at Ghana's anniversary celebrations

Girl advocating for the rights of children in Ghana

Plan is helping 150 children to make their voices heard at Ghana's 50th anniversary celebrations on 6 March, 2007.

Plan Ghana is sponsoring a program called ’Ghana @ the dawn of 50, children and the future prospects’. 150 children representing various regions across the country, including Plan program areas, are going to meet the regional minister face-to-face in an open forum. They will raise issues of concern and demand government action.

Children will raise issues on education, water and sanitation and other obstacles to their potential development such as a lack of infrastructure.

Plan platform welcomed by the authorities

The 'Meet the Ministers' events are already underway, with over 100 children coming together to question the vice-president of Ghana, Aliu Mahama, and one of the regional ministers, Nano Ato Arthur.

As a follow up, there are already plans for the group to have an audience with the president in July later this year.

Samuel Paulos, director of Plan Ghana, said: "As long as the platform is created for their voices to be heard at this gracious, memorable and meaningful occasion and yet by  the highest officials of the land who are responsible for all the policies and decisions, the future remains optimistic."

Plan has been working in Ghana for the last 15 years. Within that we have played a major role in supporting birth registration in a country where 45% of the population is under the age of 15. Plan gives support to education and other development projects to increase child and youth potential.
