Plan supports youth meeting with Vice President of Ghana

Excellency Vice President of the Republic of Ghana Aliu Mahama

The second in the series of ‘Meet the Minister’ was held in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region on the 24 February, 2007. This program supported by Plan Ghana in collaboration with Child Rights International aimed to promote child participation in the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Ghana’s 50th anniversary.

Students from the metropolis of Kumasi were given the opportunity to interact with top government officials, policy makers and traditional rulers on issues affecting them as children and youth of Ghana.

The occasion was graced by His Excellency the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana Aliu Mahama, who responded to some questions posed by the children. They included the following:

  • “What policies and Programs are there for the youth to ensure that the youth of today have a brighter and better future?”
  • “How long will take Ghana to be a ’developed’ country as compared with the advanced countries?”
  • “What policies is the government putting in place to ensure that the environment is protected even as Ghana celebrates its 50th anniversary?”
Chief Bantama Nana Bafur Agyemang
Kumasi being the epitome of Ghanaian culture did not leave the traditional rulers out in the event. The chief of Bantama Nana Baffour Agyemang was also present. He shared with the children the role played by traditional rulers in governance and encouraged the children to respect the traditions and culture of the country.

Plan reiterated the state’s responsibility to ensure that each citizen particularly children live in an environment that is safe, progressive, protected from ignorance, abuse, hunger, unemployment and poverty. Parents and guardians further urged to see to it that their children get a better opportunity than they ever had.
