Improving children’s welfare by increasing family income and food security
The stark reality is that the women don’t qualify for loans because they don’t have collateral. We know, however, that helping women generate an income is as important for their children as it is for the women themselves. With greater family incomes, the children also benefit as they are more likely to have regular nutritious meals and attend school.
Plan therefore began partnerships with banks and an organisation called Freedom from Hunger Ghana. Together, we set up 140 credit-and-savings associations and provided money and management expertise to women starting small businesses, such as tailoring. More than 3,800 people benefited from the initiative.
