Habitat

Building secure, safe and healthy environments for children

Our main purpose is to help communities find their own solutions to problems they have identified. The development projects we support in the area of Nongoa, an area covering 64 villages, are typical of the work we support throughout Guinea.

The list of activities for Nongoa is impressive. With their own resources and Plan’s advice and encouragement, communities built 27 latrines, two birth huts for remote villages, four wells, nine pre-school buildings, 64 kilometres of road and nine separate economic co-operatives.  As a result, the number of people per adequate latrine fell from 3406 last year to just 44 this year.  As Mr. Lansana, a village leader, explained:

“The water is clean. It’s also delicious. Moreover, our women do not have to carry it up the high hill on their heads anymore.”
