Liberia

Plan returned to Liberia in December, 2006 – 14 years after the civil war forced us to close down operations and leave the country.

Our new office in the capital Monrovia is working to support the government's reconstruction and development efforts to help children across Liberia.

Through a local partner - Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) - Plan is currently supporting a rapid education project, which has benefited more than 4,000 war-affected children.

Most primary schools were destroyed by the civil war. The project aims to return children to learning as quickly as possible, while providing psychosocial support to help them recover from the conflict.

Another priority for Plan is to work with the Ministry of Health on researching a decentralised birth registration system. We will then embark on a national Universal Birth Registration campaign.

Plan is currently engaging government ministries, local and international non-governmental organisations in Liberia in various program development discussions.

Some of the reasons why Plan works in Liberia:

  • Liberia is one of the poorest countries in the world
  • 73% of the population do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities
  • infant and under-5 mortality rates are among the five highest in the world

Giving Children a Voice in Postwar Liberia
Plan supports children's activities by marking this years International Children's Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) in Liberia
