Building relationships

Creating opportunities for children to participate in community development

Each year, Plan communities celebrate the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which lists children’s rights to education, good health, freedom from abuse and other basics in life. This helps them to focus on children’s rights and recognise any abuses of them within their own community.  Last year, the celebration took place on June 16, the Day of the African Child. By coincidence, this day was also the 20th anniversary of Plan’s start in Senegal.

More than 1,000 youngsters, wearing white t-shirts and baseball caps emblazoned with the Plan logo attended. They came from the five regions where Plan Senegal works. The celebration was co-hosted by ‘Little Fay’, aged 11, who dazzled the audience with his poise and organisation. Guest speakers included Senegal’s prime minister.
