Livelihood

Improving children’s welfare by increasing family income and food security

Most of the families we work with in Senegal depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. They grow and process their own food, usually by hand. To lighten the load for many women who thresh and husk grain, we bought a thresher and two huskers for one village. The community built the shelter for the machines.  People appreciated the new technology. As Mr Faye, a village leader, explained:

“Before this project, my wife spent most of her time pounding grain. Today, we have time to talk about many problems and find solutions together. And she spends time playing with the children.”

In a community in Senegal, the water system made potable water accessible to 6 villages...

A small amount of money makes a big difference
In Senegal, close to 4,800 women obtained a small loan to develop income-generating activities such as tie-dying, sewing, etc
