The Children’s Creative Contest is part of the activities to celebrate Plan Sierra Leone’s 30th Anniversary. In Freetown, the Youth and Child Advocacy Network (YACAN) and PEN Center jointly organize the contest with support from Plan Sierra Leone.
A total of 529 entries on the various categories were submitted by children in primary and secondary schools. About 50 children from all Plan Sierra Leone’s operational areas received stationeries and school materials as prizes for winning the Children’s Creative Contest on essay, poetry and drawing.
“The contest means something great to me. I mean to come first in any contest is not easy. The difference is that we the girls participated more than the boys”, said Kelwina, 14 of Freetown.
Children wrote remarkable stories on various topics including early marriage, violence against children, gender equality and poverty reduction.
In her essay, Diana, 16 of Freetown wrote: “early marriage is one of the social problems affecting the healthy upbringing of the girl”.
“Such programmes are important for children and this competition must continue!”, concluded Albert Kawa, Principal of the Albert Academy, one of the participating secondary schools in the contest.
