Helping children, youth and adults learn and develop life skills

The shortage of good quality primary school buildings is a serious problem in this country. Many of the existing school buildings are in a state of disrepair and are dangerous for students.  Many are discouraged from attending classes, especially during the rainy seasons.

To tackle this problem, five communities requested our support in renovating their schools.  They provided their own labour and local materials, and helped replace roofs, floors, doors, windows and blackboards. In the end, the schools were painted from top to bottom. They were great to behold, as 13 year-old Rafa explained:

“Our classroom used to be dark because of the lack of windows. It was also rundown and my classmates and myself were afraid when it rained. Now, after the renovation, I don’t know how to express my joy.”

As well as school improvement, Plan also addresses the lack of qualified teachers in the country by providing training programs for teachers.  These aim to improve teaching methods and motivation, both of which increase children’s capacity to learn.
