Active February UBR campaign in Burkina

Consisting of Plan, UNICEF, UNFPA and public structures, the coalition for universal birth registration has chosen February 2007 to lead a striking campaign in Burkina.

In addition to the promotion of Universal Birth registration at the FESPACO’07, actions were taken:

  • The national coalition gave the ministry in charge of the administration of the territory about $47,600 to support birth registration in six provinces in Burkina Faso.
  • Led by the Minister in charge of social affairs, the coalition met the chairperson of Burkina’s parliament Mr. Rock Marc Christian Kaboré.

One child out of three is unregistered

The coalition reminded to the parliament of the commitments made by the State through its ratification of the Convention on Child Rights, pointing out that one child out of three was not registered at birth.

Mr. Kaboré promised to take up the issue with the government for action.

The King Of Mossi People Promises full support to UBR

The coalition ended the round of visits to personalities at the palace of the ‘Mossi King’, Mogho Naba Baongo, king of the Mossi people, the largest ethnic group in the country, to ask him to help sensitize his people on birth registration.

Mogho Naba Baongo promised to send a message round, and asked the different actors to contact traditional chiefs in the regions hosting advocacy and birth registration activities for the necessary support.

Having used a large media coverage in a decisive and efficient campaign, Plan has made the UBR campaign in Burkina Faso a remembering event.
