Access to safe Water in West Africa with the help of Plan

In West Africa, Water is a very important issue affecting every country because of the sahara desert situated in the north of the region. As the desert is moving further south, sub-saharan countries are facing drought crises, which causes famine and food crises as well as water penuries.

People in rural parts of west Africa have big difficulty in accessing water. They have to walk dozens of kilometers to the nearest water point. As children are often the ones that go fetch water for the family, they can't go to school on a regular basis because of such chores.

Plan has been helping governments in making changes to the lives of children and their communities in West Africa. Like you can read in the stories further down, Plan has been installing boreholes and water pumps in its working areas to ease the lives of the communities. Children can now attend class and go to school regularly.

Water is vital for farmers in Ghana
Plan Ghana supported the Buoti community to realise their dreams of building a water retention project in support to their farming activities.

Relieving pupils from hard water chores
Plan helps the community of Sampalo access safe water and reduce their time in fetching water. This enables children to be present in school more often.

Clean water with the help of Plan
Plan successfully provides villages in Niger with clean water by installing solar pumps in one of the driest regions of the world.

What is remarquable from this work is the fact that girls, who long had been kept home to help in the house chores including fetching water, can attend school. Having provided clean and safe water to the villages helps to prevent from water born deseases.

the Desert is still threathning the region. But as long as governments take their responsibilities and enough funds are collectes to install more water pumps and irrigation installation for the cultivator: there is hope the the region will at least slow down the desert's progression further south, and face drought period with less harm.
