Juvenile environmental leadership – Placa prizes
The Ángel María Herrera High school students, in Penonomé, Panama, intended to save the Zaratí River, changing their citizens’ conscience. They have achieved it.
Young boys and girls designed a project to change the attitude of their local people about the Zaratí River. They used the radio to promote their concern and initiative, involving their school staff, environmental authorities and the governorship.
On the other hand, girls, boys and adolescents of Jesus María community, Ecuador, have elaborated and executed a Community Development Plan that allows the exercise of their right to live in a healthy environment through the recovery of the river Portoviejo. In this initiative, they have included the Provincial Council of Manabí that has a role of important leadership and their goal of a healthy environment was integrated to the plan of health led by the municipality of the Canton Portoviejo.
This initiative has motivated Jesus Maria community to participate in the resolution of the environmental problems, generating direct impact in the well-being of all the habitants of the area.
These are two of the initiatives that have won the Placa prize, created in partnership by Plan and the Water Center for the Humid Tropics of Latin America and the Caribbean – CATHALAC, to promote the conservation and efficient use of environmental resources especially the water. The main actor of these projects has been the genuine participation and the youths' opinion, their interests and initiatives.
